Fact-Finding Mission Report on the Pangantucan Massacre

News came to Karapatan that civilians were massacred after an armed encounter between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the New People’s Army (NPA) took place in the remote barangay, Mendis, in the municipality of Pangantucan, Bukidnon.

Pursuing the communist-led armed group, members of the  3rd Company of the 1st Special Force Battalion came upon a hut in the forested area of Mendis. The initial report said that five males were in the hut. The military ordered them to come out. Once they were outside the hut, they were shot one by one. One of them was able to run and report to his neighbors what had happened and said that two of his companions had been killed. When members of the community went to the said hut to retrieve the bodies upon the instruction of the military, they discovered three more bodies, the number of deaths totaling to five. All of them were relatives, residents of Barangay Mendis.
