DEFEND. This documentary sheds light on Martial Law in Mindanao and its effects on human rights defenders (HRDs) in the island. Through the stories of Mindanawons, the film captures the fear, displacement, and disruption Martial Law has brought to the lives of Moro, Lumad and farmers who have long been struggling for their political, economic and cultural rights. The film challenges the narrative that there are no rights abuses during Martial Law in Mindanao. By shattering this myth, the documentary helps to foster healthy discussions on the appropriateness of Martial Law in this part of the Philippines punctuated by perennial poverty and strife.
Screenings in the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Marawi, Malaybalay and Valencia during the International Human Rights Week will be announced here soon.
